AFSCME Launches “Highway to Health Care Reform” Tour

Rocks and Rolls for Reform During August Recess

— The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO (AFSCME) today announced the Highway to Health Care Reform campaign, a rock and roll theme RV tour that will crisscross the country during the August congressional recess.

The Highway to Health Care Reform RV will travel through key states to mobilize the public to contact their members of Congress to demand real reform that guarantees quality, affordable health care for all.

“AFSCME will make the voices of Americans demanding real health care reform heard in the halls of Congress,” said AFSCME International President Gerald W. McEntee.

The Highway to Health Care Reform tour features an RV outfitted as a mobile activism center, complete with on-board laptop computers, cell phones and postcards for participants to contact their senators and representatives. The tour includes posters and literature that pay homage to famous rock musicians and a video that urges local residents to write and call their members of Congress.

To support this effort, AFSCME will make a heavy blog ad buy during August in key states, and urge the public to text the union’s short code to be connected directly to their Members of Congress.

“Highway to Health Care Reform will make Congress hear the truth – America can’t wait for reform that guarantees quality, affordable health care for all,” said McEntee.

The Highway to Health Care Reform tour is part of the union’s unprecedented $6 million Make America Happen campaign, which includes ads, canvassing, phone calls, online activities and the deployment of dozens of campaign field organizers to key states in support of President Obama’s efforts to win real health care reform this year.
